Local 500 member from WRHA is lucky Jets ticket winner!
We are pleased to announce the second winner of the Winnipeg Jets home
game tickets. Local 500 member Donna Dixon, who works for the Winnipeg
Regional Health Authority (WRHA), is the lucky winner and will be attending
the January 12th game as the Jets take on the Sharks.

Blue Cross Voluntary Extended Health Benefit - Update
As in previous years, the Civic Union Presidents recently met with Blue
Cross to review the Renewal Report for the Voluntary Extended Health Benefit
program. For the 4,391 members enrolled, which is down 1%, the plan's
experience continues to be relatively stable. As such, the premium rate
will remain the same and will not increase January 1, 2012. »

Paul Moist was acclaimed to another two year term as CUPE's National President. He has been national president since 2003.
Charles Fleury from Terrebonne, Quebec, was elected National Secretary-Treasurer. Fleury succeeds Claude Généreux, who after 10 years in the position decided not to seek re-election. » Read more

The 25th CUPE National Convention began on Monday, October 31 and runs until Friday, November 4, 2011, in Vancouver, B.C. At this week-long event, CUPE members from across Canada determine policy, set priorities for the Union and elect leaders. National Convention is CUPE's highest decision-making body. On October 25, Local 500 President Mike Davidson was a guest on CJOB
to discuss the issues around Winnipeg Golf Courses.
The City of Winnipeg has put out an Expression of Interest for the sale
of seven of its golf courses for commerical or residential development
or take-over of their long-term lease. The Local advised the City that
before any final decisions are made, a full business plan should be provided
to the citizens before rushing to conclude that contracting out and privatization
will automatically correct the problems.

Public Works teams earn bragging rights at fire engine pull for charity
Two Public Works teams hold the bragging rights from this year's fire engine pull held on October 3rd at City Hall. The Public Works "Go Getters" placed first with the best time (even though they had to compete twice), and the “Green Team” from the Parks and Open Space Division, won for the best cheer. » Read more

New Workplace Violence Regulations
New workplace safety and health regulations to address violence in the workplace went into effect in Manitoba at the end of August. The new regulations apply to sectors which have more risk of violence, including health care, pharmaceutical dispensing, schools, police and corrections, buses and taxis, licensed premises and others. Joint City/CUPE Scholarship Learning Program - Update
The Joint City/CUPE Scholarship Learning Program was a key feature of the Joint Education Fund. During the 2010/2011 contract negotiations between the City of Winnipeg and CUPE Local 500, the Letter of Understanding Re: Education, Training and Staff Development saw a reduction in funding from the previous agreement of $1.5 million dollars over three years to $1 million over four years. » Read more
