CUPE Manitoba Human Rights Committee hosts conference for stewards
On December 9 and 10, the CUPE Manitoba Human Rights Committee,
the Global Justice Committee and the Education Committee jointly
hosted their first mini-conference at the Union Centre. The conference
offered the new equality modules from the Steward Learning Series,
initiated to commemorate the Year of the Steward. »

of a new contract. The two parties met on November 29, 30 and

on behalf of the Local, with the approval of the majority of Central

CUPE Local 500 supports Hunger for Hope – Please help Luke Fritz
win $50,000
CUPE Local 500 has named Winnipeg Blue Bomber, Luke Fritz, as
CUPE’s hardest working player of the off-season for his efforts
to win $50,000 for his charity of choice, Hunger for Hope. This
Friday morning (November 19) on CJOB, CUPE Local 500 will be pledging
its support by donating $500 to Winnipeg Harvest in his honour.

3rd Annual Birthday Bash in memory of Shannon Scromeda
CUPE members, family and friends will gather on Friday, November
19, 2010 to celebrate and remember the life of Shannon Scromeda.
Scromeda, who worked for the City of Winnipeg, died tragically
in April, 2008 as a result of domestic violence. She was a caring
and loving mother to her young son Riley.

Learn About Recent Pension Regulation Changes
SHARE and the MFL will present a 90-minute session on November
1 to discuss recent changes to Manitoba Pension Regulations. Topics
that will be covered include recent changes to the Manitoba Pension
Benefits Act and Regulation, requirements for Pension Committees,
actions that need to be taken by pension plans and unions, and
timelines for meeting the new requirements.

Virtual Town Hall a huge success!
Winnipeg's first ever “virtual town hall” held on Thursday, October
21 was deemed a huge success!
The Winnipeg Citizens' Coalition, Water Watch, the Council of Canadians
and CUPE set up the town hall to discuss the multi-year contract
with Veolia that the Mayor and Council voted to enter into this
past May. About 100,000 people in Winnipeg received a call inviting
them to participate in the event. »

Local 500 Steward Orientation Training - November 3
The next Local 500 Steward Orientation session will be held on
Wednesday, November 3, 2010 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm at the Union Centre,
275 Broadway.
The steward orientation is a brief introduction to CUPE and its
structure both locally and nationally. Members attending the orientation
session will be eligible to be sponsored by the Local to a two
day Basic Stewarding Workshop.

Survey shows eight in ten want Veolia contract details made public
A Probe Research survey shows that 78 per cent of Winnipeg residents
believe that all the details of the 30-year contract the City
of Winnipeg entered into with the private contractor Veolia Canada
should be made public before the October 27 municipal election.

for courses starting between January 1, 2011 and June
30, 2011. You must be a City of Winnipeg employee and

Support Workers’ Week to our members working at Riverview Health
Centre and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.
This year, the Government of Manitoba has proclaimed the week
of October 4 – 8 as “Healthcare Support Workers’ Week” to acknowledge
their contribution and dedication to the health of Manitobans.

The Local's bargaining committee is continuing
its preparation for upcoming negotiations with the City of Winnipeg.
On September 28 and 29, the Local completed two
days of bargaining preparation training to ensure each member
of the union's committee is well prepared for their involvement

The Les Butterworth Scholarship Fund awards sponsored
by Local 500 were presented to four award winners in September.
One scholarship of $1,250 and three bursaries of $750 were awarded.

The Local 500 Social and Sports Committee's Bud, Spud and Steak
fundraising event held on September 11, was a great success. The
event, combined with silent auction, 50/50 and other ticket draw

Billboard and bus ads promoting quality public services have
gone up this week in the city as part of the Local's "Positively
Public" campaign. "These ads are meant to raise public
awareness about the importance of quality public services to our

Has your workplace been visited?
Since the beginning of the year, CUPE members working in 37
different worksites have been visited by Local 500 President Mike
Davidson and other union representatives. The purpose of a workplace
visit is to communicate with you and discuss the key issues facing
your workplace and our union. Meetings can be held before or after
work or during the lunch hour. To request a vist, please contact
