MayWorks Festival kicks-off with opening of photo exhibit

Mayworks kicked-off it's Festival of Labour and the Arts on Friday, April 30 with the opening of the "In Their Footsteps" photo exhibit at the Millennium Library. This exhibit of historical pictures depicts the struggles of women at the turn of the century to more recent times. The photos feature some of our more prominent leaders in their struggle for justice and dignity for women. CUPE Local 500 and CUPE Manitoba co-sponsored the exhibit. » Read more

April 28 is International Day of Mourning

April 28 is a day to remember our co-workers who were killed on the job. It is also a day to commit ourselves to eliminating workplace illness and injury. The day was founded based on a resolution written by CUPE’s National Health and Safety Committee in 1984.

The Joint City/CUPE Scholarship Fund is now accepting applications for courses starting between July 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010. You must be a City of Winnipeg employee and a member of CUPE Local 500 who has attained and maintains CUPE seniority.

2010 Budget Process Underway

The City of Winnipeg budget process is currently underway. A review by the Standing Policy Committees and the Executive Policy Committee (EPC) was held the week of March 8 -11 and the final recommendations were tabled at EPC on March 15. City Council will conduct its final review and adoption of the budget on March 23.

The union will be watching the budget debate closely and appearing before all necessary Committees of Council. Copies of the CUPE briefs presented will be posted on the website and available from the Local 500 office.

Local 500 Launches more Billboard Ads

Billboard ads promoting public services have gone up in the city this week as part of the Local's "Positively Public" campaign. This is the Local's fifth round of billboards to help educate the public about our campaign. You'll find the billboards at four locations: Sargent Ave. East of Century St., Pembina Hwy North of Howard St., Archibald St. South of Plinquet St., Archibald St. South of Plinquet St.

Humane Society members ratify new agreement

Local 500 members working at the Winnipeg Humane Society voted 90% in favour of a new agreement on February 10, 2010. The new three-year agreement will provide wage increases of 1.5% in the first year and 2% in the second and third year of the contract. The new agreement also includes a provision for boot allowance for one classification.
