The Winnipeg Civic Employees’ Benefits Program - Transfer of Funds within the Program
As you will recall, contributions to the pension plan were increased effective January 1, 2010 in accordance with the terms of the Trust Agreement. This same Trust Agreement defines how money contributed to the plan is used. The purpose of the contribution increase was to protect existing benefits. In order to do this, the Plan needs to transfer these funds from the Future Contribution Account to the Main Account. » Read more

Local 500 radio ad promotes public services
Local 500 is airing more radio ads to promote the value of public services.
As part of our Positively Public campaign, Local 500 will be launching
radio, print and another series of billboard ads plus bus shelter ads
beginning the week of May 17.
"We want to remind all Winnipeggers that public services are delivered
by their neighbours, friends, and family members," said Local 500
President Mike Davidson. "Public services are vital to building a
strong and healthy community and our members are proud of the work they
do for the citizens of Winnipeg."
The radio ad is running on CJOB throughout May and June. Click here

MayWorks Festival kicks-off with opening of photo exhibit
Mayworks kicked-off it's Festival of Labour and the Arts on Friday, April 30 with the opening of the "In Their Footsteps" photo exhibit at the Millennium Library. This exhibit of historical pictures depicts the struggles of women at the turn of the century to more recent times. The photos feature some of our more prominent leaders in their struggle for justice and dignity for women. CUPE Local 500 and CUPE Manitoba co-sponsored the exhibit. » Read more

Labour Congress (CLC) to get support for its plan to fix the pension system.

April 28 is International Day of Mourning
April 28 is a day to remember our co-workers who were killed on the job.
It is also a day to commit ourselves to eliminating workplace illness
and injury. The day was founded based on a resolution written by CUPE’s
National Health and Safety Committee in 1984.
A number of ceremonies are being held to commemorate this significant

The Joint City/CUPE Scholarship Fund is now accepting applications for
courses starting between July 1, 2010 and December 31, 2010. You
must be a City of Winnipeg employee and a member of CUPE Local 500 who
has attained and maintains CUPE seniority.

Local 500 spring clean-up safety radio ad
Local 500 is airing radio ads that promote road safety during spring clean-up operations. The ad is running on Bob, Hot 103 and CJOB from April 5 - 11. The ad is a reminder to all motorists to take extra care while driving through clean-up zones. You can click here to listen to the ad.
