City Council has approved action that could put our water and wastewater
treatment facilities in private hands. Any form of privatization could
jeopardize public water.
Join us on Friday, March 20, at 12:00 noon, City Hall Courtyard to express
our concerns that Winnipeg water be kept a healthy and affordable resource.

Local 500 Launches Billboard Ads
Billboard ads promoting public water have gone up in the city this week as part of the Local's "Positively Public" campaign. In November last year, Winnipeg City Council approved a very significant motion that dealt with city utilities and particularly the expansion of our water treatment facilities.» Read more

Standing Committee wants current Park Police model reinstated
On March 10, 2009 the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works recommended that the reorganizing of the Winnipeg Park Police at City Parks be halted and the current Winnipeg Park Police model be reinstated. » Read more

2009 Budget Process Underway
The City of Winnipeg budget process is currently underway.
A review by the Standing Policy Committees and the Executive Policy Committee
(EPC) was held the week of March 3 - 10 and the final recommendations
will be tabled at EPC on March 19. City Council will conduct its final
review and adoption of the budget on March 24.
The union will be watching the budget debate closely and appearing before
all necessary Committees of Council. Copies of the CUPE briefs presented
will be posted on the website and available from the Local 500 office.

Free Public Skate courtesy of Local 500
As part of the Local's "Positively Public Campaign", we are
offering a free public skate session on February 28. All Local 500 members
and their families are encouraged to attend.

Steward Orientation Training
The Local is offering Shop Steward Orientation Training on Thursday,
February 20 and 26 from 7 - 9 pm at the Union Centre. Both sessions will
take place in the CUPE Boardroom, 7th Floor, 275 Broadway.
This is a brief introdution to the job of a union steward and to the structure
of our Local.

Get Active: Join the Health and Safety Committee
CUPE Local 500 is looking for members interested in participating in
our Health and Safety Committee.
The Health and Safety Committee is a standing committee of the Local where
members discuss health and safety problems, solutions, strategies and
priorities. The committee meets at the call of the chair.
Any member, who would like to work on and educate others about health
and safety issues, is encouraged to contact the Local 500 office at 942-1001.
