Action Letter: Tell Winnipeg City Council to Support Public Water

The corporatization of water services, both in North America and abroad, has lead to increases in prices and decreases in services. We need to state clearly that Winnipeg water and waste services must remain publicly owned and operated. Commemorating 90th Anniversary of 1919 Strike

On Saturday, May 23, in commemoration of the 90th Anniversary of the Winnipeg General Strike, a special free performance of the condensed version of Danny Schur's award-wining musical Strike took to the stage at Winnipeg's City Hall. The on-hour version of the musical Strike! - Winnipeg Shocks the Nation, featured a cast of 100, period vehicles, mounted horses and a life-sized replica of teh infamous streetcar at the centre of the riot that sparked Bloody Saturday. About 5,000 people attended the re-enactment of this historical event.

Privatize this! Panel discusses privatization and deregulation of public services

A well-attended public forum to discuss the threats of privatization and deregulation of public services was held on May 21 at the Millennium Library. The panel discussion was hosted by the Industrial Workers of the World (Winnipeg) and the Winnipeg New Socialist Group.

The panelists included CUPE Local 500 President Mike Davidson who spoke about the concerns with the City’s plans to explore a new ‘municipal corporate utility’ and the procurement of a ‘strategic partner’ to expand two water treatment plants for the city. Other panelists included Monique Woroniak, a City of Winnipeg Library worker and Mark Roy, a letter carrier with Canada Post.
