City Council votes in favour of new city-owned utility

On July 22, Winnnipeg City Council voted 10-6 in favour of a new city-owned utility that will assume responsibility for water and sewage treatment, garbage and recycling pickup and possibly energy services. » Read more July 16, 2009

EPC approves Municipal Corporate Utility

On July 15, the City's Executive Policy Committee (EPC) of Council voted unanimously in favour of creating a Municipal Corporate Utility despite opposition by a number of concerned citizens, groups and other stakeholders who were critical of the plan.

CUPE Local 500 President Mike Davidson made a presentation on behalf of the 3,400 members working at the City of Winnipeg.

The proposed plan will still require final approval by City Council when they meet on July 22.

Water and Waste Department "Blue Wave" Tours

From June 2 – 11, the Local attended a number of workplace meetings in the Water and Waste Department to discuss the City's initiative for a new "water utility and strategic partner" for water and sewer services. Until the City is clear on what the finished model will look like, the Local is not taking a formal position at this time. The one important thing we want our members to know is that your concerns are a priority and we will do everything possible to address them during this process.
