On International Women’s Day we reflect on the progress we have made toward achieving fairness, equality and justice for women in Canada and across the globe. It is also a time to be inspired by the change we have achieved together, and to renew our resolve to continue to work hard on the unfinished business.

This year’s International Women’s Day celebration comes at the heels of two global campaigns in the form of #MeToo and #TimesUp – bringing sexual harassment and equal pay to the forefront of the agenda.

“When workers stand together for fairness, we can be a powerful force for women’s equality and positive change, at the workplace, in our union and in society,” said Local 500 President Gord Delbridge.  “While CUPE and the labour movement have made significant progress over the years for women’s equality, the wage gap between men and women still persists today. Equal pay for equal work needs to go from being a goal to becoming a reality in achieving equality,” said Delbridge.

International Women’s Day events are scheduled throughout Thursday, March 8 including a breakfast beginning at at 5:30 p.m. at the Union Centre, 275 Broadway.
