Today, the Canadian Labour Congress elected a new president for the first time in 15 years at its convention in Montreal.

Hassan Yussuff defeated incumbent Ken Georgetti by 40 votes —2,318 compared with 2,278 for Georgetti.

Georgetti, was first elected in 1999 and went on to become the CLC’s longest-serving president.

Yussuff has served as the CLC's secretary-treasurer since 2002.

In other CLC election news, Barbara Byers defeated Nathalie Stringer to be named the secretary-treasurer of the CLC. Byers has been the national Executive Vice-President of the CLC since 2002, and prior to that she was the President of the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour (SFL).

Also elected were Marie Clarke Walker and Donald Lafleur to the positions of Executive Vice-President.

The Canadian Labour Congress is the national voice of the labour movement, representing 3.3 million Canadian workers. The CLC brings together Canada’s national and international unions along with the provincial and territorial federations of labour and 111 district labour councils.
