City’s ASD Committee approves plan to lease four city-run golf courses

February 25, 2013 at 3:31 PM

Today, the City’s Alternate Service Delivery (ASD) Committee of Council approved a recommendation to lease four city-run golf courses -- Crescent Drive, Harbour View, Kildonan Park and Windsor Park -- to the private sector.

According to the city’s administrative report, by entering into 10-year leases on the four golf courses, the city is projecting to improve the annual net income and capital investment by $710,000 a year.

“Over the past several years, Local 500 has provided this and previous Councils with recommendations on how the municipal golf courses could remain profitable assets to the City of Winnipeg,” said Local 500 President, Mike Davidson. “To date, none of these recommendations have been considered or acted on."

Winnipeg’s public golf courses have been around since 1921 and have a long and proud history of providing accessible and affordable golf in our city.  They have been a special part of Winnipeg’s landscape for many decades and are essential to the quality of life we enjoy in our city.

“It’s unfortunate that Winnipeg’s golf courses have been allowed to deteriorate and fail in their operations over the years,” said Davidson.  “Had there been the political will to re-invest back into the golf courses, they would not be in the condition they are in today.”

The Local will continue to represent your interests with all available resources to fight back against these and other contracting out and privatization initiatives.
