All CUPE members deserve respect: in the union, at work and in our communities. Each member must feel and be free of discrimination regardless of her/his ethnic background, religion, gender, ability, sexual orientation or sexual identity.

Although sexual diversity has become more recognized, homophobia still exists, even if the ways of expressing it are increasingly subtle. Our societies recognize that homophobia is a form of discrimination just like all other forms of discrimination. To fight it, we need to make everyone, from all walks of life and various cultures, aware of all aspects of this reality.

May 17th is International Day Against Homophobia

May 17th  is a symbolic day for the homosexual community. Long considered to be an illness, homosexuality was removed from the list of mental illnesses on May 17, 1990 by the World Health Organization (WHO).

But one day to fight against homophobia/transphobia is not enough. We must continue to work to ensure that our collective agreements, bylaws, policies and procedures eliminate discrimination and promote pride in our LGBTTI members. We must educate our members and ourselves and become more sensitive to LGBTTI co-workers, ensuring a safe environment.

CUPE members are encouraged to recognize May 17 – The International Day Against Homophobia. Join us at a Rally on Thursday, May 16 from 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm at the Manitoba Legislature.  Say NO to bullying and homophobia and show your support for Bill 18.  Hope to see you there!
